The USA, Denmark and Germany are on the podium when it comes to progress and power in digitization. This is shown by the Euler-Hermes-Enabling-Digitalization-Index-2020.
The index not only assesses the status quo of digitization in a total of 115 countries examined, but also the potential for digitization based on five components. These are regulation, knowledge, connectivity, infrastructure and size. The EDI measures the ability and agility of countries to help digital companies to flourish and to support traditional companies in order to take advantage of digital opportunities, explains Euler Hermes. Germany is among the top three, but has lost ground compared to previous years. It has dropped from second to third because Denmark now holds that position. By the way, China is catching up and Germany is sitting on the back of the neck, they say.
"As is hardly surprising, digitization acts as a buffer in coping with the Covid-19 pandemic," explains Ron van het Hof, CEO of Euler Hermes in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The study has also shown that the front runners in the “Enabling Digitalization Index” have come through the Covid-19 pandemic better economically than those countries that are lagging behind in terms of potential for digitization.
The USA is the lonely digitization frontrunner
The pole position of the USA is explained by its first-class knowledge ecosystem, the size of the market and the favorable regulatory framework. The country's connectivity value rose by 1.8 points by the end of 2019, after an increase of 5.1 points in the previous year, informs Euler Hermes. "Germany's strengths are also a good knowledge ecosystem, but there is also the excellent logistical infrastructure," explains Ron van het Hof.
In terms of regulation and market size, the Germans were able to improve slightly. However, the connectivity quality has decreased compared to the rest of the world. And this despite the continuing upward trend in the number of secure servers. This is due to the lower number of mobile phone connections per 100 inhabitants and a slight decline in the number of Internet users since the end of 2019.
Germany could and should do more
"Germany has a lot of potential, but is still leaving parts of it untapped," says Van het Hof. China, on the other hand, has clearly shown how dormant potential can be used extremely efficiently. It is no coincidence that the country catapulted from 17th to 4th place in the three years before the pandemic, and Germany is on its heels. Even if digitization in this country received an unexpected boost from the Covid 19 pandemic, the Germans would have to see to it that they did not fall behind. Now is the time to set the course for this, warns Van het Hof. This affects the framework as well as the investments and the practical implementation of digitization measures in companies. The specialist believes that this is a decisive success factor that should not be despised, especially in times of crisis.
Denmark shows how “the little ones” can make it big too
Another country that shows how to do it is proven to be Denmark. The Scandinavians started 2020 as the best performer in terms of connectivity quality, according to the analysis. In fact, after tripling the number of secure servers in 2018, Denmark managed to more than double it again. This means that the northern countries even reach a higher number than China and Canada. They're also close to France's server count, with a population of just 6 million people.

A China, por outro lado, mostrou claramente como o potencial latente pode ser usado de forma extremamente eficiente. Não é por acaso que o país saltou da 17ª para a 4ª posição nos três anos anteriores à pandemia, e a Alemanha está logo atrás. Eles também estão próximos da contagem de servidores da França, com uma população de apenas 6 milhões de pessoas.
